SFRA Testing

Sweep Frequency Response Analysis for Power Transformers

SFRA Testing

SFRA (Sweep Frequency Response Analysis) is the most sensitive technique for detecting mechanical deformation of power transformer windings and core — damage that can occur during short-circuit events, transportation incidents, or seismic events. Green Watt's SFRA systems allow asset managers to assess whether a transformer's internal geometry has changed without opening the tank.

Key Features

  • Wide frequency sweep: 20 Hz to 2 MHz for full winding, core, and bushing coverage
  • High dynamic range: up to 100 dB for detecting subtle deformation signatures
  • Complete sweep in under 1 minute per winding terminal pair
  • Standard test connections per IEC 60076-18 / CIGRE TB342
  • Automatic comparison against stored baseline with deviation reporting
  • Fingerprint database for trend analysis across multiple measurement campaigns
  • PC software with phase angle plots and automated assessment
  • Lightweight portable unit in a single carry case

Applications

  • Post-short-circuit assessment before returning a transformer to service
  • Pre- and post-transportation fingerprinting for new and repaired transformers
  • Routine asset condition assessment for transformer life management
  • Post-seismic event verification
  • Ranking transformers for prioritised refurbishment or replacement
